Chemistry Nobel Award Recognizes 3 Researchers for Pioneering Research on Metal-Organic Frameworks

This year's Nobel Prize in the field of chemistry has been awarded to three distinguished scientists for their foundational contributions on porous materials.

Their research has potential to solve numerous major global issues, for instance capturing carbon dioxide to combat global warming or minimizing synthetic debris through advanced chemistry.

“I feel tremendously honored and overjoyed, many thanks,” said Professor Kitagawa in a telephone conversation with the press briefing following hearing the decision.
“How much time must I spend here? I need to leave for a scheduled meeting,” he added.

These 3 winners will share monetary reward amounting to 11 million Swedish kronor (£872,000).

Molecular Architecture on a Center of their Breakthrough

Their scientists' research involves how molecules are structured together into complex frameworks. Award organizers referred to it as “molecular design”.

The experts formulated techniques to build structures with large voids amid the molecules, allowing gases and other chemicals to travel via them.

These materials are called metal-organic frameworks.

This reveal was made by the academic institution in a press event in the Swedish capital.

Susumu Kitagawa works at the University of Kyoto in Japan, Professor Richard Robson is associated with the University of Melbourne in Australia, and Prof. Yaghi is connected to the California University in the United States.

Recent Nobel Winners in Scientific Fields

During the prior award cycle, three other scientists won the award for their studies on biological molecules, which are critical building blocks of biological systems.

This is the 3rd scientific prize awarded recently. Previously, three physicists earned the physics award for their research on quantum theory that paved the way for the development of the quantum computing system.

Earlier, 3 scientists investigations on how the body's defenses targets pathogens earned them the prize for medicine.

One winner, Dr. Ramsdell, was unaware of the notification for 20 hours because he was on an remote hiking trip.
